What Happens When You Show Up

Corporate volunteering has evolved. What once looked like a Saturday spent painting a community wall has become something organisations are thinking about much more carefully. The question is no longer whether to do it, but how to make it mean something, for the people who participate and for the community that receives them.

This month, a group of volunteers from Unit4 travelled to Athens from different corners of the world. Their organisation sent them here as part of their corporate volunteering programme Act4Good. For a week they came to ANKAA, got to know our space, and became part of what was already happening in our space.

What corporate volunteering actually is

At its core, corporate volunteering is the structured involvement of employees in community or social initiatives, typically as part of a broader CSR strategy. It sits at the intersection of employee engagement, social impact and organisational values. Most decision makers working in this space are already familiar with the concept. What is less often discussed is what separates a programme that genuinely delivers from one that simply fulfils a requirement. The answer, more often than not, comes down to the partner.

A week at ANKAA

The volunteers from Unit4 did not arrive to a schedule designed around them. They arrived to a space that was already in motion. ANKAA Project operates daily out of a building in Kypseli, Athens, where Greek language classes, a tailoring workshop,ethical manufacturing and an urban garden all exist alongside each other as part of one living organisation.

Over the course of the week they worked in the garden, joined the Saffron Kitchen Project team in the kitchen and fed a crowd, got hands on with ethical manufacturing in our tailor lab, and worked on a graffiti wall under the guidance of Nikos, whose knowledge of street art runs deep. They stepped in, found their footing, and got involved in whatever was happening around them. In their own words, at the end of the week:

"It's nice to make something that will stay here for a while."

"We feel that we had a real impact."

"Consider us ANKAA alumni and have us as allies from now on. We are not here every day but I think we can keep collaborating remotely to continue impact and follow-up with what we did this week."

Why the partner matters

Choosing where to direct a CSR investment is a meaningful decision. The right partner is not one that builds a programme around your group, but one that has its own purpose, its own community and its own daily rhythm. One that your people can step into and contribute to genuinely, rather than symbolically.

The experience also does not have to end at the activity itself. The most thoughtful corporate volunteering programmes weave together hands-on involvement, learning and reflection in a way that gives participants something to carry back with them. That combination of doing and understanding is what turns a good experience into a lasting one.
