We advocate for social inclusion, an acknowledgement of a shared history, equal opportunities and a celebration of cultures and skills. We recognise people for their skills, experiences, future ambitions and goals.
Why We Started ANKAA

It’s 2016, and what the media called the ‘refugee crisis’ is flooding the headlines. Like thousands of volunteers, we, the co-founders of ANKAA, arrived in Greece driven by a strong will to act. Our journey began on the island of Chios, where we all met, witnessing firsthand that the emergency response measures, though essential, weren’t enough. There had to be something more—something that gave people a chance to rebuild their lives with dignity, stability, and hope for the future.
This is where ANKAA was born, not just from a desire to help but from a commitment to doing things differently. Our vision was to create lasting opportunities for displaced individuals to learn, work, and thrive. We envisioned a space where people could actively participate, reclaim their agency, grow, and take charge of their futures. It wasn’t just about providing help—it was about amplifying voices and opening access to education and employment opportunities that could lead to real, sustainable change.
Today, we know ANKAA has become more than just a nonprofit. We are a community.
With gratitude, always,
Line & sara

WHAT DOES
'ANKAA' MEAN?
The Ankaa star is the brightest star in the constellation of the Phoenix, a symbol of rebirth, renewal and hope. From Arabic and Latin roots, Ankaa stands for the 'star of the skiff', guiding the way for travellers of the sea. Together we
want to light a new path for people seeking a brighter future, as they
continue to write their stories.
How We Help
We support our students building a brighter future through our educational programmes in Greek language, sewing, and creative workshops that open doors to employment and connecting with others.

Education
We support vulnerable communities (asylum-seekers, refugees, migrants, people seeking employment) in Athens by offering for free:
-
Greek language classes for A0 and A1 levels
-
Tailoring classes for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels
-
Upcycling and handicrafts workshops

Ethical Manufacturing
Our social business implements the principles of circular economy in all our processes. This means our products are made from locally-sourced or upcycled materials: from rubber boats to corporate banners. Production is carried out by experienced Tailors, often times former ANKAA students, in an ethical and fair working environment.

Our Story

We could have not do any of it without our dedicated team members, volunteers, partners and friends, in Athens and abroad.
ANKAA is driven by a diverse group of professionals coming from across the world. Each team member brings their specific background, and particular sets of skills, to the project: from entrepreneurship to design, education science, architecture, gender studies, tailoring and so on.
